Visual Perception Activities for OT: What to Use and Why

When a student struggles with handwriting, copying from the board, or losing their place while reading, visual perception is often part of the picture. The right activity helps — but only when it matches the skill that is actually breaking down.
This guide walks through the skill areas school-based OTs address most, with free activities you can use in your next session.
Visual tracking and pursuits
Smooth pursuits let a student follow a moving target — a ball, a finger, a line of text tracked with a finger. When pursuits break down, you see head movement instead of eye movement, or complaints of fatigue during close work.

Saccades
Saccades are the quick jumps the eyes make between targets — the exact skill behind moving from word to word and line to line while reading, and from board to paper while copying.
Watch for overshooting, undershooting, or losing place. Saccade activities pair naturally with academics: letter or word targets turn an eye-movement drill into a reading-ready task.
Visual memory and sequential memory
Visual memory supports spelling, copying multi-step directions, and remembering what was just read. A student with weak visual memory re-reads constantly and copies one letter at a time.
Memory sequence games grade cleanly: fewer items, longer exposure time, and verbal rehearsal for younger students; more items and shorter exposure as skills grow.
Figure-ground and visual discrimination
Figure-ground is finding one thing among many — a pencil in a cluttered desk, a word on a busy worksheet, a line on a map. Students with figure-ground difficulty often look disorganized when the real problem is perceptual.
Reduce background clutter first, then build tolerance for busier fields.
Visual motor integration
Visual motor integration is where perception meets the hand — spacing, sizing, alignment, and staying on the line. It is the final common pathway for handwriting.

Match the activity to the level
The Five-Level Visual Performance Framework organizes these skills from Visual Access (is the visual system healthy and ready?) through Visual Efficiency, Visual Processing, and Visual-Motor Integration, up to Functional Integration — how vision shows up in the student's real day.
Address diagnosed acuity, contrast, or field limits while you remediate efficiency, processing, and motor integration — and refer when something is undiagnosed or changing. Never pause treatment to wait for a referral.
